Who are we?
We are a small specialist plant nursery based in North Yorkshire. We started our business as Topiary By Design 20 years ago as a complement to our already existing landscaping business, Beech Tree Landscapes, which was started over 23 years ago. We became interested in Topiary and the art of forming plants into artistic shapes at a time when it was not easy to buy ready shaped topiary. We decided that we wanted to grow and supply our own topiary to give our customers the opportunity to add instant impact into their garden designs.
Starting out
When we started Topiary by Design we were not in a position to open a nursery to the public, so decided that we wanted to exhibit at the Flower Shows in order to have real contact with customers and share our passion for the sculptural quality that topiary can bring. The first ever show that we attended was the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show in 1998 where we achieved our first Silver Gilt medal, this was to be the start of a long history of showing and displaying our plants.
Changing location
We then found our permanent home in North Yorkshire as well as having 3 children. Since moving to our permanent home over 15 years ago we have continued to grow and develop our nursery business as well as continuing with our landscape gardening business. We also grow, sell and supply Lavender and herbs which are often used to complement a topiary style garden, box parterre or knot garden. From our experience of landscaping in private gardens as well as commercial, we are able to offer advice and knowledge of growing and designing with box, topiary, Lavender and herbs. We are not a large commercial operation as we want to be able to maintain a personal service of care and quality. We do not employ large numbers of staff which is why we do not open regularly to the public.
Changing name
5 years ago we took the decision to change our business name from Topiary By design to Beech Tree Farm Plants, with other companies using a similar name, we wanted to avoid any confusion and association with other business's of a similar name. We still continue to offer the same quality of plants and topiary accessories that we have always done.
